Jacotte Sibre

France • 1942

Even before I begin, the sculpture is present within me. I hold it in my hands.

Biography

Jacotte Sibre's works reveal both a prolific imagination, nourished by the world of entertainment, and a lucid and sensitive view of society. Her work is 'bittersweet', as it is (often) funny and moving. But it is also very personal, with a strong narrative power and ability to identify with the viewer.

In her Belleville studio, multicoloured monsters and chimeras (terracotta) sit alongside a few portraits (in pencil and pastel). Scenes from everyday life (women and children) are captured on canvas (oil and acrylic) like snapshots. A few landscapes are created in tapestry (high smooth).

Sculpture is omnipresent. Whether in textile, stone, wood, terracotta or bronze, whether depicting women, Opera, singers or myths, everything is material for sculpting. For Jacotte, sculpture is 'THE' discipline, the one that represents a form of fulfilment.

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1942, Jacotte Sibre is an artist, painter, illustrator, engraver and sculptor from Belleville.

A graduate of the French Institute of Photography, Jacotte  opened her fashion photography studio with her husband in 1969. Between photo montage and ready-to-wear fashion shows, Jacotte discovered a real affinity for textiles. Alongside her professional activity, she created her first pieces, which she exhibited in 1976 at the inauguration of the Pavillon Baltard in Nogent-sur-Marne. She soon lost interest in the world of fashion photography. Jacotte then trained as a costume designer.  She discovered the world of entertainment, which she would never leave. In 1986, she opened her own workshop and began designing and making costumes for the theatre, opera, cinema and circus, while also working on her own artistic production: drawing, painting, sculpture, engraving and multimedia
