Description
Laurent Chabot, plastic artist, poet and photographer, entered painting as one enters religion, his journey is an endless quest that he carries out without haste, with fervor and faith. Indeed, what happens when the "black" sun completely takes hold of a being? But Laurent Chabot's sun is yellow without detecting any obsession or alienation. Yellow is the color that Laurent Chabot has chosen since he started painting. This color then spread to other mediums (drawing, photography). It is his signature, without weakness or repetition. "I am far from having finished this prospecting" he confides. The question is to understand where the line of graphic work is located. Before applying the yellow? After? Alluring magic which in his series of "Portraits" led us in the process of revelation, just like in that of the appearance in his series of paintings. Is it dawn? Is it twilight? The present past? The future ? The great sweetness of a Millet? The coldness of an astral deluge? An "American night"? In this regard, didn't Laurent Chabot write "In broad daylight, the sun shines at night"? It is all these possibilities that make Laurent Chabot's work oscillate between controlled classicism and modernity. There is no brutality, however, in Laurent Chabot's work, except for this incessant journey from eye to soul. - Sylvie Reymond-Lépine, Curator at La Ville de Paris

Presentation

Laurent Chabot is a French self-taught painter born in 1951. He starts to use yellow early in his career, systematically in his paintings and photographs.

"This color persists and is with me day and night" says the artist. His career path is unconventional. Growing up on a farm, he used to work and play in the fields - "the wheat fields and the field of possibility".

A little later, he moves to the city, where he creates his artworks and little by litthe goes back toward this light from his past. Laurent Chabot drawns us in color, deleting any spatial reference and visual obstacle to attract us towards far-away horizons, hard to reach.
