“Tropical Bond" is a contemporary figurative painting depicting a woman and a parrot, created by French artist Natalya Mougenot as part of her ongoing Women series dedicated to emotional bonds and inner life.

The painting presents a frontal female figure whose face is intentionally left without features. This deliberate absence removes individual identity and social definition, allowing the figure to become universal rather than personal. As Mougenot explains:

“What interests me is not who we appear to be, but what we carry inside."

Standing calm and grounded, the woman embodies inner stability and quiet strength. She exists not as a portrait of someone, but as a presence — a silent space that invites introspection and emotional awareness.

At the heart of the composition, the parrot plays a central symbolic role. Held close to the woman's body, it is not an exotic or decorative element, but a symbol of bond and connection. Traditionally associated with voice and communication, here the parrot represents a deeper, wordless relationship — a form of trust and emotional resonance that exists beyond speech. Mougenot emphasizes:

“A bond can only exist if it is honest. Without honesty, there is no real connection."

The closeness between the woman and the bird reflects mutual recognition and loyalty. For the artist, authenticity is essential not only in human relationships, but also in artistic creation:

“A canvas always reflects the personality of the artist. You cannot hide behind technique. People always feel if what they see is true or not."

The surrounding tropical plants frame the figure symmetrically, creating a sense of balance and protection. Nature, in Mougenot's work, is never a simple backdrop:

“Nature is never decoration. It is a living presence that supports the inner world of the figure."

Color functions as an emotional language throughout the painting. Warm yellows and ochres convey light, warmth, and vitality, while deep blues introduce calm and introspection. The parrot's vivid yellow and blue body echoes this chromatic dialogue, uniting the figure and the bird within the same emotional field.

“Color is not decoration. It is energy, emotion, and vibration."

True to her intuitive practice, Mougenot paints without preparatory sketches, working in a single uninterrupted session. The visible brushstrokes preserve the trace of a specific inner state rather than a constructed image:

“I paint in one setting. The canvas keeps the trace of a moment that cannot be reconstructed later."

From a metamodernist perspective, Tropical Bond balances sincerity and awareness, symbolism and openness. The painting does not rely on irony or superficial aesthetics. Instead, it embraces emotional truth while remaining conscious of contemporary complexity. It oscillates between abstraction and figuration, intimacy and universality — a central dynamic of metamodernism.

Mougenot firmly rejects the idea of painting as mere ornament:

“My paintings are not decoration. People live with art. What matters to me is that what hangs on their walls carries truth, calm, and positive energy."

Tropical Bond opens a contemplative space around trust, authenticity, and inner alignment — in relationships, in self-connection, and in art itself. Rooted in a contemporary metamodern sensibility, the painting offers collectors a timeless and grounding presence: a work that brings warmth, honesty, and a sense of silent connection into the space it inhabits.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
