David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974) is one of the major figures of Mexican painting, Mexican muralism , and Latin American modern art. Born in Camargo, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, he studied at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City from 1911 before participating in the Mexican Revolution, an experience that profoundly shaped his political and artistic commitment. Between 1919 and 1922, he lived in Europe, where he discovered the avant-garde, Italian Renaissance painting, and modern movements that would deeply influence his work. Alongside Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, he became one of the "Tres Grandes," the three leading figures of the Mexican muralist movement, advocating for public, monumental art accessible to all.
Deeply committed to revolutionary and communist ideals, David Alfaro Siqueiros developed an artistic practice dedicated to social issues, justice, class struggle, and Mexican identity. His work is distinguished by dynamic compositions, bold perspectives, and the use of innovative techniques. He experimented with industrial paints , spray guns, pyroxylin, screen printing, lithography , wood engraving, and various methods of color projection that would influence several generations of artists, including Jackson Pollock during his time at his experimental studio in New York.
Among his most emblematic works are the frescoes La Nueva Democracia (1944-1945, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City), Del Porfirismo a la Revolución (1957-1966, Museo Nacional de Histoire, Chapultepec Castle), and the immense mural program of the Polyforum Cultural Siqueiros, considered one of the largest mural ensembles in the world. His easel paintings also include major works such as Echo of a Scream (1937), Collective Suicide (1936), and Zapata (1931), now held in important international collections.
Throughout his career, Siqueiros participated in numerous international exhibitions dedicated to modern Mexican art. His works are notably held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City, and in many public and private collections. His legacy remains essential to the history of monumental painting , social realism, engaged art, political art, printmaking , figurative painting, and 20th-century Mexican art, making David Alfaro Siqueiros one of the most influential artists in the history of modern art.
