The Complementary Set

Prato From February 4, 2021 to March 27, 2021

Presentation
In the works on display Stefano Galli intervenes on the landscapes, subsequently painting elements that sometimes contrast and sometimes complement the represented background. Traits appear in the series of storms that grotesquely take the scene represented to extremes but which, at the same time, contribute to creating a precise harmony: the sublime aspect prevails over the chaotic and tragic one of the flood or a hypothetical shipwreck, the power of nature in its primordial and uncontrollable aspect and the lightness of a few large drops of blue water against the gloomy scenery.

A more contrasting, fantasy-world intervention is the hallmark of the Jungles series. The forests are inhabited by gigantic insects, sometimes recognizable, other times belonging to the imagination and painted by the artist with the use of unlikely colors. They move in this context as if they were the beings that have always populated the ecosystem: they are guardians, custodians or are invading another habitat, as in an apocalyptic scenario derived from global warming. In other works they are rainbows that rise into the sky after the storm or ufo highlighted by arrows as in a science fiction journalistic article.

The artist thus succeeds in the arduous task of bringing a breath of fresh air into painting, the oldest and most used means of expression, carving out a stylistic niche of his own. He does it using tools that have become commonly used such as photo editing, which can be done by anyone with their smartphone or PC, thus using a contemporary element within everyone's reach and which certainly does not require technical training to be reproduced.

This contamination between tradition and contemporaneity leads us to other reflections on the truth and falsity of the representation, to the modifiability of what we are seeing or witnessing. The artist's skill lies in making a scenario probably true for us that is actually very unlikely to come true, however making us aware that what we are witnessing makes sense. What is surprising about Stefano's paintings is how in the whole of the canvas elements completely contrasting with each other coexist both on a technical level (i.e., of the pictorial manufacture) and on a conceptual level.

The power of this contrast gives life to a complementary whole, that is, to a whole made up of elements in contrast with each other but which cannot exist separately.
