Biography

Hayk Makyan is an Armenian painter born in 1975, whose work moves fluidly between the intimate and the monumental — from sun-drenched still lifes glowing with the colours of everyday Armenian life, to sweeping spiritual and historical compositions that speak of memory, faith, and collective identity.

Working primarily in oil on canvas, Hayk has developed a mature and immediately recognisable style — bold, confident brushwork, a rich and luminous palette, and a deep sensitivity to light that gives even the simplest arrangement of fruit, flowers, and ceramic vessels the warmth of a lived moment. His still lifes pulse with colour: cobalt blues, burning reds, golden yellows, and the deep green of Armenian mountains — assembled with a joy that feels both spontaneous and deeply considered.

His figurative and spiritual works reveal another dimension of his artistry. Paintings of robed figures standing before walls of fire, of Armenian pilgrims gathered beneath ancient monastery towers, and of solitary women holding birds of peace carry a quietly powerful emotional charge — rooted in Armenian history, Christian iconography, and a profound sense of human dignity.

His landscapes capture the dramatic terrain of the Armenian highlands with expressive, gestural energy — mountains dissolving into planes of colour, villages nestled into sun-baked hillsides, the land itself rendered as something almost sacred.

Across all of his work, Hayk Makyan paints with the conviction of an artist who believes that beauty, colour, and storytelling are not separate things — but one and the same act.
