Biography
My Country
My work evolves, but is still strongly connected to artefacts and landscapes from my country and my Barkindji roots (my mother’s country), in Broken Hill and Menindee in Western NSW. Traditionally identified Barkindji objects; boundary markers, canoes, coolamons, shields and totem poles provide the conduit as to how we function within community, then and now. As I create each piece I reflect upon my country, my home, my family and myself. I returned to creative processes I developed early in my career, realizing now the subconscious genetic memory I had inherited from my people that was apparent in the glass pieces I created all those years ago, the connection I felt, and the spiritual significance that holds for me now. The results are monolithic glass pieces with colours/designs inspired by a spiritual connection to country and the ever-changing colours of the desert. The stillness of the desert allows for quiet contemplation, reflection. I return to myself when I return to my country. (‘Return to Country’ exhibition Netherlands -Oct 2014).
