David Lurkin

David Lurkin is a Belgian artist who works exclusively with raw charcoal on canvas. Each work is for him the extension of an emotion carried. The gesture is often marked by chaos — raw lines, dense black masses, rubs and washes — as a way to let out what is too heavy to keep inside. At the same time, he always seeks a form of serenity. The bodies sometimes seem to be falling, sometimes in levitation, suspended between gravity and lightness, between floating and anchoring. Even in the most intense expressions, there remains a soothing side. The line is sometimes brutal, but behind it is always the intention to find a balance between chaos and a form of calm. Drawing is for him a way to continue moving forward, between what is intense and what floats, between the fall and lightness.
