Biography

“A people who do not know their history, their origin and their culture are like a tree without roots.” Marcus Garvey

Dieudonné Djiela Kamkang holds a master's degree from the University of Fine Arts in Douala where he lives and works.

Kamkang's work addresses the issue of youth and the importance of knowing its history in order to give new generations a solid foundation. Through his works, the artist explores the notion and question of "restitution" while showing the role and place of traditional culture in development and the future. It invites us to return to our roots, to follow the model of Sankofa (Ashanti concept teaching us the importance of learning from the past to build the future).

Dieudonné presents the child as a treasure of the future by defining him as an heir, an important being in the family and in today's society. Passionate about painting and captivated by the work of the African-American artist Kehinde Willey, the photographer Namsa Leuba and the artist Hervé Youmbi, he is concerned by the place of the child in contemporary society, a child that he perceives it as a treasure, as the next generation. So he magnifies them in his works by raising them to the rank of “heirs” through facial expressions, attitudes and body gestures, majestic or even sumptuous poses through lines and colors arranged according to numerous superpositions of layers on the brush and often dotted with patterns of Ndop fabric (symbol representative of greatness).

Dieudonné has participated in numerous exhibitions and fairs, including Art X Lagos and Arco Lisboa.
