Biography

ROBERT CARDINAL (1936 - ): Robert Cardinal is a Canadian-American painter born in Montreal in 1936 and best known for his atmospheric landscapes of Cape Cod and the surrounding New England coast. After moving to New York City in the late 1950s, he became involved in the Greenwich Village art scene and traveled to Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he developed a lasting connection to the Cape Cod landscape. He studied at the La Grande Chaumière Art School in Paris and was influenced by the Realist and Impressionist traditions, as well as artists such as Goya, Maxfield Parrish, and Edward Hopper. Cardinal is particularly recognized for paintings of isolated beaches, lighthouses, cottages, boats, and coastal buildings, often rendered at sunrise or sunset with dramatic skies, luminous color, and strong contrasts of light and shadow. His work emphasizes the harmony between nature and man-made structures and has been exhibited and collected widely, including by institutions such as the Cahoon Museum of American Art.
