Biography
Gérard Fourel was born in 1946 in Ille et Vilaine, France. For nearly 40 years, he has been photographing the workers in Fougères, rural societies in the north of Portugal, Castilla and Leon, Brittany and children.
Gérard Fourel never stopped taking pictures: factories that are closing down, peasants working, marriages, carrousels... the children run in circles, the dancers are sliding, cows are returning home from the pasture, and from time to time in this carousel of time a picture freezes everything, emblematic and motionless.
An alarm clock on a table, the two hands are still, the long hand and the small hand, and the old woman sitting still is eternal. The picture is the evidence that she is eternal.
