Biography
Gilbert was born in 1967 in Firminy, the city where he spent his childhood. Surrounded by the architectural legacy of Le Corbusier, his early exposure to art was shaped by the modernist influence embedded in the city’s landscape. From an early age, he developed a strong passion for drawing, creating his first paintings while always favoring pencil as his primary tool of expression.
During his studies at architecture school, Gilbert began exploring the relationship between light, form, and everyday objects, developing a particular admiration for the aesthetic language of Pop Art. Over time, his deep interest in automobiles inspired a shift in his artistic direction. Fascinated by detail and form, he started using photography as a way to frame objects in close-up, revealing often overlooked features.
This new focus led him to embrace acrylic paint and larger canvases as his medium of choice. His creative obsession became the classic automobile. Across his series, he highlights distinctive features: hubcaps, bumpers, dashboards, reflections in headlights, handles, curves of bodywork, and more. Through these works, elements of abstraction emerge from the hyper-detailed representation of the car.
Gilbert’s approach touches the realm of photorealism, where meticulous detail and bold color combine to evoke emotion. His paintings balance the boundary between reality and illusion, transforming familiar mechanical forms into captivating visual compositions.
