Jean Brouillet

Much like Orson Welles, who wrote: "I am a director, set designer, painter, novelist, illusionist, actor, filmmaker. I am amazed that so many of me have come." 

Jean Brouillet could say in his turn: "I am a lawyer, painter, writer, sailor, curious about the world around me, in love with the land where I was born."

Jean Brouillet's painting is multifaceted. This is what gives it all its charm and singularity. Occasionally—though more rarely—the artist leaves us with quasi-documentary drawings, reminiscent of travel journals.

More often, his watercolors are an evocation rather than a quest for reality. The artist is very rarely a naturalist, and therein lies the very principle of creation: being capable of transcending reality to transcribe one's own sensations when faced with a landscape or an object... an impression.
