Jean-Luc Breda

Jean-Luc Breda is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Reims in Champagne. He has been practicing painting for twenty years after having felt very strong emotions when he discovered the strength of the work of Bacon or Basquiat. First attracted by expressionism and free figuration for energy and movement, he gradually moved towards large-format works outdoors which led him to discover the power of color and play of light. His relentless practice of research on transparency and chromatic interactions takes him to the limit of lyrical abstraction drawing his inspiration from the great masters, from Turner to Zao Wu Ki. He alternates acrylic and oil on panel or on canvas in his easel formats where shapes and lights merge in a sensitive, instinctive and particularly elegant artistic writing in this haunting search for light which gives the whole its three-dimensional appearance. Sensation of strangeness, of an unreal world but yet familiar and so dreamlike. His technique, close to dripping, alternates mediums and materials in an incessant search for effects. We think of Victor Hugo and his fantastic drawings when strange shapes spontaneously arise, ruined castles, underwater world, apocalypse. This work makes sense because it is intimately addressed to each of us, a fantastic journey into another dimension where the subtle chromatic associations reveal to us an unreal, strange and inexorably so attractive world.
