Presentation

“My work is the result of the sculptor I almost am, the architect I would have liked to be and the designer I’m not quite.”

Self-taught having long forged his own pieces and strong of an experience that allows him to have an enlightened dialogue with the best craftsmen and companions to go further and further in the search for shapes, Eric Schmitt takes an ingenious approach to the possibilities and constraints of materials. It combines with dexterity a know-how from the French tradition of decorative arts and a resolutely contemporary approach to design.

Working with materials of invariable grace that live through the ages, such as bronze, alabaster or Bohemian glass, he does not hesitate to associate them with synthetic materials such as Corian or anodized aluminium, which have become classics for him. Over the years, he got rid of the ornaments of his beginnings, simplifying the lines until he reached a vocabulary of shapes that makes the objects difficult to date.

“A piece of furniture needs to emanate from silence to be loved for a long time”, says Eric Schmitt who is satisfied with showing rather than demonstrating. Limited editions or unique pieces, all come through the workshop for the finishing touches and the designer’s signature.
