Biography

Born August 8, 1910 in Tourcoing, Eugène Leroy discovered painting around the age of 15, when his mother gave him his father's paint box. Encouraged by his teachers, he studies Rembrandt, then Jordaens, Greco and Goya and will follow their recommendation to work from nature throughout his life.

In 1931, he returned to the Beaux-Arts in Lille, then he went to Paris and took drawing lessons at the Grande Chaumière.

He settled near Roubaix in 1935 and exhibited for the first time in Lille in 1937. In 1943, he met the critic Gaston Diehl who exhibited him in Paris.

Passionate about the great masters, he travels to Germany, Spain and Italy. A figurative painter, he nevertheless remains very interested in abstract painting and in particular in the work of Malevich and Mondrian.
