Biography

Philippe Morisson is a painter, author of collages and geometric abstract engraver (lithographer).

Born in 1924 in Deauville, France, a self-taught artist, he began painting portraits and landscapes in 1940, then in 1944 produced his first 'vehement' and brutal figurative paintings, which gradually moved away from figuration. 1945: First abstract paintings.

He corresponded with Vlaminck (an intense exchange of letters), admired Delacroix, and discovered Klee, Kandinsky, and Mondrian. He then met Mortensen, Vasarely, Soto, Dewasne, and the Denise René gallery. All became close friends. A period of austere and restrained works followed, then a vertical organization of space and a horizontal organization of colors and their succession, partly systematic, partly intuitive. The structures of his works correspond to the landscapes that marked his youth, the sea in particular. Music and the predominant role of color are important. Unlike abstract painting in general, the colors in his canvases are never dependent on form or a pre-existing organization of the painting; they determine its composition. He joined the Denise René Gallery group in 1961, moved to Paris in 1964, and worked there until his death in 1994. A "constructive" abstract artist (a term he preferred to "constructivist"), he participated in the Salon de Mai, Salon d'Automne, Salon Comparaisons, Salon des Grands et Jeunes d'Aujourd'hui, and Salon Réalités Nouvelles for decades, eventually becoming a group leader. He had numerous solo and group exhibitions in France and abroad, and his works in a variety of media—acrylics, oils, gouaches, screen prints, lithographs, and even five tapestries woven in Aubusson—are held in public and private collections worldwide. In addition to this considerable body of work—50 years of painting—he also undertook architectural projects related to his initial training, which ran parallel to his early career in painting.

The composition of his works, which evolved over time, was always marked by his characteristic style and his exploration of the musical resonance of colors. Morisson lived in Paris, where he worked in his studio in the 13th arrondissement until his death in 1994.
