Presentation

Jacques Martinez was born on July 7, 1944 in El-Biar, a small village in the hills above Algiers. He spent his childhood in the town of Bône, today Annaba, which was called Hippone when St Augustine lived there.

From 1956 he lived in Nice where he studied and obtained a master's degree in philosophy. He moved to Paris from 1973 while still keeping a workshop in the South. Since 1990 he has made frequent, long and regular stays in Spain and Italy.

At the beginning of his work, he was attached to the School of Nice (César, Arman, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Ben Vautier, etc.): he was indeed present in a few exhibitions under this title and one of his paintings was hung at the opening of the Center Pompidou in 1977, on the occasion of the exhibition “About Nice". He has never hidden the admiration he felt for the work of Martial Raysse, Caesar or for certain pieces by Arman (he was also the assistant to the last two).

He exhibited at the Daniel Templon gallery from 1974 to 1985, and at the Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand gallery from 1990 to 1997.

In 1999 and 2016 the MAMAC of Nice devoted personal exhibitions to him. Since 2017, he has exhibited with the SPARC * - Spazio Arte Contemporanea gallery in Venice.
