Biography

Ulrich Wellman's work has helped shape the outlook on colourpainting to a large extent. He lives and works in Cologne. The artist collaborated with Günter Umberg on the creation of the historic site “Raum für Malerei” (“The space of painting”) in Cologne (27 international coloring painting fairs). The painter has presented his work in many international venues, in Basel, New York, San Francisco, London, Madrid or Frankfurt. His work has entered several national museums and large private collections. He is interested in the elementary questions of painting and offers answers in image and color. In his latest watercolors, Wellman no longer uses paper as a simple two-dimensional medium, he also draws attention to its material characteristics. These revealing spaces are produced by folding, scraping, cutting, twisting and tearing off the paper before it is painted. The traces of action and contact with the paper are always visible in the finished work. These traces fully participate in his work by constituting new data that guide the artist in his painting. Ulrich Wellmann responds to these traces with delicate and sensitive color work, allowing the image to develop. These watercolors don't just refer to themselves. They make their wall, their light, their space, and their environment is imbued with chromatic sensations. At this moment, they belong to the place.
