Markus Rock was born in Solingen in 1962. After 25 years as a freelance photographer in San Francisco, Munich, Paris and Barcelona, Markus Rock currently lives and works in Berlin. In his last work, Markus Rock dealt in particular with the complex and ambivalent meaning of physicality for the individual and his relationships. Larger-than-life prints were on view in 2018 under the title “The I and the Other" on the Nordart art fair. The current 12-part work “Vanitas" focuses on transience and plays with seemingly classic still lifes that have been transferred from baroque painting to contemporary photography. Nevertheless, the motifs differ fundamentally from their classic predecessors in their references to the present. The mixing of classic vanitas symbols with modern, industrially manufactured objects sets the style for this work and at the same time touches our understanding of the values that questions the use of these symbols.
