Biography

PAULEUS VITAL (1917 - 1984): Pauleus Vital was a Haitian painter born in Jacmel, Haiti, whose highly detailed and imaginative works became an important part of the modern Haitian art tradition. Before turning to painting, Vital worked as a shipbuilder and cabinetmaker, skills that contributed to the careful structure and intricate detail of his compositions. At the age of 38, he was introduced to the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince by his half-brother, the renowned Haitian painter Préfète Duffaut, and studied there for several years before returning to Jacmel in 1959. Vital drew inspiration from Haitian daily life, landscapes, villages, architecture, and Vodou ceremonies, creating richly colored scenes filled with narrative and symbolic detail. His paintings often combine elements of the natural and spiritual worlds, reflecting the cultural traditions of Haiti and the distinctive artistic heritage of Jacmel. His work is represented in major collections including the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami, the Waterloo Center for the Arts, and Ramapo College of New Jersey.
