Biography

Kapoor Anish is a British-Indian sculptor, best known for his large-scale urban installations and conceptual pieces. He was born in Bombay in 1954 and, after attending one of the most prestigious boarding schools in India, moved to the United Kingdom to study at Hornsey College of Art. He soon became known for his geometric and biomorphic sculptures using simple organic materials.

Today, some of his most notable works include his 2006 “Cloud Gate” installation, now on permanent display in Chicago’s Millennium Park, and his 2011 “Leviathan,” which was exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris.

The artist has been recognized on several occasions for his contributions to the British contemporary art scene. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1991, a knighthood by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2013, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2014.
