Biography
Silvio Zangarini (b. 1981) is an Italian visual artist and photographer based in Groningen, the Netherlands. With a degree in Aesthetic Philosophy from the University of Turin, his practice explores perception, spatial memory, and the hidden complexity of everyday reality.
Through layered photography, Zangarini transforms familiar objects and spaces into subjects of contemplation, inviting viewers to question the act of seeing and the boundaries between reality and perception. His work is characterized by a poetic dialogue between presence and absence, often combining playful visual elements with an underlying investigation into how we construct our understanding of the world.
Zangarini has lived and worked in Turin, Aarhus, and Utrecht, collaborating with institutions and galleries across Europe and the United States, including in Rome, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Leeuwarden, and New Orleans. Each city becomes a new lens through which he examines and reinterprets reality.
Alongside his artistic practice, Zangarini works as an architectural and event photographer, developing a parallel socially engaged visual practice. His artistic work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, Fotografia Europea, and the Copenhagen Photo Festival, as well as in numerous solo exhibitions.
He has participated in major art fairs including Kunst RAI, PAN Amsterdam, and Art Karlsruhe, working with galleries such as Eduard Planting and Galerie Roos van Tudor.
His selected exhibitions include at the Grachtenmuseum in Amsterdam; at the Italian Embassy Art Space during Copenhagen Photo Festival; at Kunsthal Aarhus; in Reggio Emilia; and at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Amsterdam.
Zangarini has also participated in artistic residencies and programmes including 100x Kunst in de Akerk at Kunstpunt in Groningen, KickstART at in4Art in Amsterdam, and the Sigrid Stue Residency at Kunsthal Aarhus. His photography continues to explore the space between what is seen and what remains hidden, transforming everyday reality into a layered and poetic visual experience.
