Biography
Afro Basaldella was an Italian painter born in 1912 in Italy and died in 1976 in Switzerland.
He studied art in Rome.
Mostly known by his first first name Afro, he is famous for his abstract paintings. At first his creations had mostly a classical style but he approached Cubist aesthetics very soon, following the example of Braque and Picasso in 1937.
During the 40s he turned towards Expressionism and left to America in 1950. Five years laters, he participated in the Documenta 1 by Kassel, in Germany and was recognized as the best Italian artist during the Venise Biennale in 1956. He then continued exhibiting his work abroad and did a fresco for the UNESCO called "THe Garden of Hope".
His pieces are present in museums all around the world including at the Guggenheim and the National Gallery of Modern Art of Rome.
