Marco Grassi (born in 1966 in Milan, Italy) is a contemporary Italian painter recognized internationally for his portraits hyperrealist paintings, his female figures, and his singular approach blending contemporary figuration, Pop Art, realism, and chromatic experiments. Graduated in architecture from the Liceo Artistico B. Luini, he lives and works in Mariano Comense, Lombardy. His work has established itself on the international scene thanks to an exceptional technical mastery and a constant research into color, material, and the representation of the human body.
The human figure, and more particularly the female portrait, constitutes the heart of his artistic practice. Marco Grassi creates works of remarkable precision while going beyond the simple exercise of realism. He applies pigments directly onto the canvas, without preparatory drawing, working mainly with a palette knife to build surfaces rich in textures and layers of material. This layering technique gives his paintings a visual depth where each layer of color contributes to the emotional construction of the subject. His compositions associate meticulously modeled flesh tones with flat areas of vibrant colors, metallic effects, and abstract backgrounds that blur the boundaries between hyperrealism, contemporary art, and pictorial abstraction.
Marco Grassi's universe questions the notions of identity, beauty, femininity, and perception. His models seem suspended in an enigmatic silence where the gaze becomes the central element of the composition. The artist thus renews the classical genre of portraiture by infusing it with a psychological and contemporary dimension, while claiming influences related to Pop Art, photo-realism, and contemporary figurative painting.
Since the early 2000s, Marco Grassi has exhibited in many international galleries and fairs. Among his main solo exhibitions are YoungGuys (3401 Gallery, Miami, 2011), Wonderland (Galleria Ca' d'Oro, New York, 2011), Colour in Retrospect (Niche Gallery, Los Angeles, 2012), Gold Experience (Aspen Art Gallery, Aspen, 2015), SuperGolden (Ransom Art, London, 2016), Keep Rockin' Superstar (Galerie LeRoyer, Montreal, 2018), Don't Just Be a Pretty Face (HOFA Gallery, London, 2019), Focus (Galerie LeRoyer, Montreal, 2020) and Mama Raised Me Right (HOFA Gallery, London, 2020). He also participates in many group exhibitions and was selected for the opening of the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011.
Marco Grassi's works are today in important private and public collections in Europe, the United States, and Canada. Sought after by collectors for his immediately recognizable pictorial language, he establishes himself as one of the major figures in contemporary figurative painting, contemporary portraiture, hyperrealism, and contemporary Italian art.
