Harumi Yukawa

Harumi Yukawa is a Japanese artist whose practice merges traditional sumi ink with Western painting techniques to explore memory, silence, and emotional nuance. Educated in Japan and the U.S., including a B.A. in Art Practice from UC Berkeley, she studied conceptual approaches to art-making that prioritize
idea over form—an influence that continues to shape her practice today.

Drawing from both the embodied discipline of calligraphy and the reflective processes of painting and photography, her works express the quiet tension between presence and absence. Yukawa's compositions are guided by the Japanese notion of ma—the invisible intervals between things—inviting the viewer into subtle emotional landscapes shaped by light, shadow, and time.

Through her ongoing series Gradation of Life, she creates spaces for resonance, stillness, and personal reflection, offering a silent dialogue between East and West, memory and perception.
