Ayobola Kekere-Ekun: Weaving Paper, Power, and Myth into Layers of Meaning.

Biography

Ayobola Kekere-Ekun, born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1993, holds a B.A. and M.A. in Visual Arts from the University of Lagos, where she now serves as a graduate assistant. Specializing in quilling, she shapes strips of paper to form intricate, three-dimensional pieces that explore themes of gender, mythology, power, and the human experience. Ayobola sees the meticulous nature of quilling as a metaphor for the complexity of her subjects, creating dynamic layers of light and shadow. Her recent “Knowledge” series delves into the shifting nature of information in modern society. Using printed material as a symbol, she presents knowledge as a living entity—growing, changing, and sometimes mutating within today’s rapid technological and social shifts. This series reflects on collective memory and the impact of accelerated information cycles on social and political landscapes.
