Biography

Vera Tamari is a Palestinian artist, educator, curator, and art historian whose work explores memory, identity, place, and Palestinian cultural heritage. Working primarily with ceramics, sculpture, installation, and painting, she combines traditional materials and forms with contemporary ideas. Her works often draw on the Palestinian landscape, family histories, and everyday objects, using clay and other materials to reflect on the relationship between people, land, and memory.

Born in Jerusalem in 1945 to a Palestinian family originally from Jaffa, Tamari studied Fine Arts at Beirut College for Women, graduating in 1966, and later specialised in ceramics in Florence, Italy. She received an MPhil in Islamic Art and Architecture from the University of Oxford in 1984. Tamari taught at Birzeit University for nearly two decades and played an important role in developing art education and cultural institutions in Palestine, including founding the Birzeit Ethnographic and Art Museum. She lives and works in Ramallah, where she continues to be active as an artist, educator, and cultural figure.
