Vuk Vidor

Vuk Vidor is a Franco-Serbian contemporary artist, born in 1965 in Belgrade (then Yugoslavia). Painter, plastic artist, and performer, he is recognized for a body of work that mixes contemporary painting, figuration, Pop Art, conceptual art, political art, and visual culture. Son of the painter Mangelos Vidor, he grew up in an artistic environment before settling in France in the early 1990s. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Belgrade, he develops a multidisciplinary practice where painting, installation, photography, video, and performance dialogue around the major issues of globalization, media, and symbols of power.

Vuk Vidor's work is distinguished by immediately recognizable iconography, nourished by references to popular culture, art history, geopolitics, and contemporary mythologies. Working mainly with oil, acrylic, and mixed media, he détourns the codes of Pop Art and narrative figuration to question the notions of identity, nationalism, war, consumption, and power. His famous character of the Balkan Superman, as well as his representations of eagles, flags, or modern heroes, testify to a critical reflection on collective narratives and the mechanisms of propaganda.

Influenced as much by Nouveau Réalisme, American Pop Art, Narrative Figuration, Eastern European avant-gardes, and conceptual art, Vuk Vidor develops an aesthetic where humor, irony, and provocation serve as an analysis of political and cultural power relations. His work combines great technical mastery with an intellectual reflection on the global circulation of images, media, and contemporary identities. Painting thus becomes a space of confrontation between fiction, historical memory, and current events.

Since the 1990s, Vuk Vidor has exhibited numerous solo and group exhibitions in France, Serbia, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, and many other countries. His works have been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, the Palais de Tokyo, the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade, as well as in numerous international galleries. They are now in several public and private collections. A major figure in the European contemporary art scene, Vuk Vidor pursues a committed work where contemporary painting, political art, Pop Art, figuration, popular culture, globalization, and social critique meet in a powerful and resolutely current plastic language.
