Biography

Born in 1982, Koo Young-woong is a contemporary South Korean artist whose work explores the relationships between human beings, matter, and the universe. Trained in painting at Hongik University in Seoul, he obtained his degrees in 2008 and 2010, and then completed his doctoral studies in 2020.

At the heart of his approach, the series "Particles" offers a reflection on how small elements constitute a whole. Particles become a metaphor for the experiences, emotions, and memories that shape each individual. Their encounter evokes the coexistence of singularities and their capacity to create a common beauty.

Working particularly with acrylic on canvas, the artist associates various colors with cosmic and mythological images. Pegasus and winged figures embody the freedom of imagination, while some works dialogue with art history, through tributes to Edvard Munch. The sanding of the surface leaves traces that participate in the meaning of the work, suggesting the passage of time and the imprints of experience.

Between figuration and abstraction, Koo Young-woong develops a painting that invites reflection on our place in a world composed of countless interacting elements.
