Presentation

Javier de Juan was born in 1958, he lives and works in Madrid where he studied architecture. Before he got settled there, the artist traveled a lot and discovered several cities like Paris, Essaouira, Marrakesh, New York, Mallorca, Caracas, Murcia and Cairo.

Javier is particularly interested by the city, its architecture, progress and the inhabitants. He transposes this through many techniques (drawing, painting, installation, engraving, printing, video and cinema). The artist tries to involve the public as much as possible and broadcast his artistic work.

In the 90's, he moved to Mallorca where he developed a more personal and symbolic work which helped him express his own ideas. This encouraged him to use large formats, on which he portrays chaos and infinitude of the world. His move to Muricia, far from the urban life made him create more introspective work, and this needed reflection.

He doesn't follow any trend or fashion and is therefore appreciated for this, in fact he shows his own viewpoint. He was awarded the National prize for engraving and received a grant from the Marbella museum. When he came back to Madrid, Juan focused on wooden, paper and fabric collages, working with new mediums and new technology.

During the 2000's, he began 3D work on collective memory, using his own symbolic elements and language. In 2003, his work went through an important retrospective in Mallorca. He began his first video editing in 2004, his personal testimony on new technologies, which guided him to make movies gradually. In 2008, he mainly created visuals like 3D animations. Recently, he has once again turned towards the object and has begun to manipulate photos.

His work is particularly appreciated by galleries and international institutions like Telefonica Foundation, Lidner Foundation, Dusseldorf Collection of the Teatro Real Madrid, Contemporary art museum in Madrid.
