Biography

Born in 1976, Titus Kaphar is an American artist. He initially taught himself to paint through museum visits and in 2006 received his MFA from the Yale School of Art.

Kaphar's multimedia works challenge the prevailing narrative of art history by centering the African American subject. He creates deconstructive sculptural canvases which explore colonialist legacies and their influence on personal and cultural identity.

Solo exhibitions of Kaphar's works have taken place at Seattle Art Museum; the Studio Museum, Harlem and the National Portrait Gallery, Washington. Kaphar is the recipient of several notable prizes and awards. In 2018, he received the MacArthur Fellowship and in June, 2020 his artwork was used on the cover of Time magazine.
