Lloyd Ziff (1942 – 2024) was an acclaimed American photographer and art director known for his work with Vanity Fair, House & Garden, and Rolling Stone. His photography captures moments of romance, escape, and optimism, offering a glimpse into the beauty and complexity of life. Ziff's images have appeared in prestigious publications such as The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, and Rolling Stone, and his portraits of icons like Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe have been featured in Smith's autobiography, Just Kids.
Ziff's photographs are included in the collections of major institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Palm Springs Art Museum. He held one-man exhibitions in Paris, New York, and Los Angeles and published several notable books, including Lloyd Ziff-New York/Los Angeles: Photographs 1967-2015, which was named one of the 50 Best Books of the Year by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). His work, available as archival silver-gelatin or digital Giglée prints, is known for its fine art quality and long-lasting archival standards.
In addition to his photography, Ziff taught design, photography, and illustration at prestigious institutions like Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts. He was also a dedicated board member of Pratt Institute, where he graduated in 1967. Ziff passed away in 2024 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking photography and a lasting influence on the art and design world.
