CAROLYN ANDERSON (1948 - ): Carolyn Anderson is an American painter best known for her powerful portraits and figurative paintings, particularly her depictions of Native American people and the people of the American West. Born in Mandan, North Dakota, in 1948, she studied at the University of North Dakota, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1970, and later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Montana. Anderson is recognized for her expressive handling of paint, subtle color relationships, and ability to convey the character and individuality of her subjects. She has traveled extensively throughout the American West, developing close relationships with Native American communities that have informed much of her work. Anderson has received numerous awards and honors, including the Prix de West Purchase Award and the Autry National Heritage Award. Her paintings are held in prominent museum and private collections, including the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Booth Western Art Museum. She has been an influential figure in contemporary American Western painting and continues to work from her studio in Montana.
