Biography

ROBERT PHILIPP (1895 - 1981): Robert Philipp was an American painter born in New York City in 1895 to Austrian parents. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League of New York, where he later taught. Philipp became known for his richly colored, expressive paintings of portraits, figures, still lifes, landscapes, and interiors. His style combined academic draftsmanship with the vibrant color and energetic brushwork associated with modern European painting, particularly the influence of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He exhibited extensively throughout his career and received numerous awards, including prizes from the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Philipp was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1946. His works are held in the collections of major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum. He died in New York City in 1981.
