Biography

DOUG SWEET (1950 - 2023): Doug Sweet was an American photorealist painter known for highly detailed landscapes and still-life compositions, particularly paintings that explore the effects of light on everyday objects. Born in Kansas in 1950, Sweet developed an early appreciation for the realism of 16th- and 17th-century European painting and its ability to tell stories through carefully observed imagery. After encountering Jackson Pollock's work at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, he became interested in the expressive possibilities of abstraction and paint handling, influences that remained part of his approach to realism. He earned a BSFA from the University of Southern Colorado in 1972 and an MFA from Idaho State University in 1976. Based in Texas, Sweet became recognized for meticulously rendered still lifes featuring glass, fruit, flowers, and other objects, as well as landscapes, combining photographic precision with an expressive sensitivity to color and light. His work was exhibited at institutions including the Dallas Museum of Art and the Museum of the Southwest and was represented by galleries including the Carol Robinson Gallery in New Orleans. Sweet's paintings are held in private and public collections, and his long career also included teaching and mentoring emerging artists.
