Presentation

Richard Prince is an American painter and photographer born in 1949 in the American part of the Panama Canal. Today he lives and works in rural Montana, not far from New York. Internationally recognized artist, he is one of the most popular photographers of the moment, among the most expensive in the world.

Richard Prince is often associated with the art movement of appropriation. This controversial movement consists of using already existing works of art and reclaiming them through plastic work. Prince excels in this area, and reuses many photographs or other media signed by his contemporaries for his personal work. This approach sometimes earned him reprimands, especially from artists who felt stripped of their work. In 2008, photographer Patrick Cariou sued him for copyright infringement.

Richard Prince works around the notion of selection, thus echoing the inventor of the ready-made Marcel Duchamp. His photographs are the first to exceed one million dollars at auction. It was with "Untitled Cowboy" that he achieved this feat for the first time during a sale at Christie's in New York. The photograph is sold for 1.2 million dollars. In 2006, “Tender Nurse" was sold for $ 2.25 million by Phillips in New York. "Spiritual America" reaches 3.9 million dollars at a sale at Christie's.
