Tyrone Layne

United States

Biography

Tyrone Layne’s large, abstract paintings are inspired by his interest in the New York school of abstract expressionism of the 50s and 60s and artists such as de Kooning. The large format canvases give Layne the space to paint with action, rhythm, and freedom of expression through color, form, and bold brush strokes. He builds up many layers of textured oil paint.

For Layne, these abstract paintings are a new journey, searching for the unknown through automatic drawings of his imagination. New ideas space from each painting, which he carries forward into the next.

Although he has tried to abandon recognizable forms, Layne still has a sense of figurative and landscape elements coming out of the abstract shapes and marks. In a sense, much of the work has become a form of surrealist landscape. He views them as a representation of the uncertainty of modern times, a portrait of current or future societies. Layne lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
