Biography

Born in 1962 in Brooklyn, Gregory Crewdson is a major figure in American photography, known for his cinematic approach to image-making. Now based in New York, he plans each photograph with the precision of a film shoot, enlisting actors, sets, prop masters, storyboards, and make-up artists. This artistic method lets him evoke not only the dark side of the American dream but also probe his own psychological torments.

Crewdson believes that photography remains silent, freezing moments without past or future and thus deepening their mystery. His works are characterized by an ethereal, intriguing atmosphere often tinged with melancholy. Each picture opens onto a suspended narrative scene, inviting viewers to invent their own story for the image.

Beyond his artistic practice, Crewdson has taught photography at Yale University and has appeared in documentaries on contemporary art. His ability to fuse the worlds of cinema and photography has shaped his distinctive style and secured his international reputation as an innovative visual artist.
