Biography

GEORGE HENRY SMILLIE (1840 - 1921): George Henry Smillie was an American landscape painter and graphic artist born in New York City in 1840. The son of celebrated engraver James Smillie and younger brother of artist James David Smillie, he studied engraving with his father before turning primarily to painting. He also studied landscape painting with James McDougal Hart and established his own New York studio in 1862. Smillie exhibited at the National Academy of Design and was elected an Academician in 1882. He traveled extensively throughout the United States, producing landscapes inspired by Long Island, New England, the Adirondacks, the Rocky Mountains, Yosemite Valley, and Florida. His early work reflected the panoramic traditions of the Hudson River School, while later paintings became more intimate and Tonalist, influenced in part by his travels in Europe and the work of James McNeill Whistler. He was particularly known for scenes of the New England and Long Island coasts, employing atmospheric effects, dramatic viewpoints, and expressive brushwork. Smillie's work is represented in major American collections, including the National Gallery of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
