Andy Warhol Campbell's Soup Cans
Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans editions hold a fundamental place in the history of contemporary art, embodying the revolution brought about by Pop Art in its ambition to elevate the most ordinary objects of mass culture to the status of artworks.
First presented in 1962 at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, this series of thirty-two paintings, each depicting a different variety of Campbell's canned soup, sent shockwaves through the art world by directly challenging traditional notions of taste, originality, and artistic value.
By deliberately choosing an everyday American object, consumed daily by millions of people and mass-produced in identical copies, Warhol questioned the very foundations of artistic creation: what distinguishes an art image from a commercial image, a unique artwork from a serial object, high culture from popular culture?
This groundbreaking gesture paved the way for an entire tradition of reappropriating consumer imagery that continues to influence contemporary creation. Reproduced through screen prints and limited editions, these works have acquired an iconic status that extends far beyond the art world, becoming one of the most recognizable symbols of American visual modernity.
On Artsper, this selection brings together editions inspired by this iconic universe, highlighting the enduring ability of an everyday object to embody major questions about art, consumer society, and the creation of images.
