Description

In Monet's Horizon, there exists an invisible line that separates not the sky from the earth, but the gaze from its own memory. The composition seems suspended in that undecidable instant where the landscape ceases to be identifiable and becomes pure sensation. Deep blues slowly dissolve into vibrant greens, while an infinity of colored projections creates a shifting, almost atmospheric space. Here and there, silvery glimmers pierce the surface like luminous reminiscences: fragments of liquid light, unstable reflections reminiscent of the changing surface of water or the fleeting brilliance of a star. The horizon of the title is not geographical: it is internal. It is the one the eye pursues when it tries to hold onto the light before it disappears.

The work evokes Monet's legacy without ever resorting to mere quotation. What it retains from him is neither the motif nor the technique, but a fundamental intuition: reality exists only through its variations of light. Here, this Impressionist quest shifts into a contemporary style where the brushstroke becomes a particle, an elemental vibration, a fragment of perception. The entire surface of the canvas acts as a living field, a space where each chromatic burst possesses its own autonomy while contributing to an overall rhythm. The silvery touches disrupt this interpretation by introducing a reflected, almost metallic light that transforms the canvas according to the angle of view and the presence of the spectator. Nothing is fixed; everything shimmers, fluctuates, eludes capture.

As the gaze delves deeper into this density of matter, the painting reveals an almost cosmic dimension. The thousands of colored dots evoke both suspended pollen and stellar maps. This ambiguity between the infinitely organic and the infinitely celestial lends the work a rare meditative depth. The red, yellow, and silver accents, scattered throughout the blues and greens, then appear as vital pulses—traces of presence within a silently expanding universe. Here, silver is no longer simply a material effect; it acts as a cool, discreet light, a memory of time deposited on the pictorial surface.

Monet's Horizon is ultimately a painting of crossing. A crossing of the gaze, of time, of light itself. The work does not seek to impose an image but to produce an experience: that of a slow immersion in a mental landscape where the boundaries between abstraction and memory, matter and light, perception and emotion become porous. Facing the canvas, the viewer understands that the horizon is never a fixed place; it is that shifting point toward which we advance without ever reaching it.

Presentation

In the light of the Masters…

For lovers of art history, Gaëlle Wagner's work is part of the continuity of the great explorations of abstraction, from Monet to Klimt, from Pollock to Rothko. Nourished by this heritage, she develops a singular pictorial language, where composition, material, and color open up a renewed view of the sensible world.

In the Concrete Abstractions of Gaëlle Wagner, each work is born from a rigorously constructed composition made up of photographic fragments. This structure constitutes the foundation upon which the artist builds to develop her work. She progressively superimposes projections and runs to enrich the pictorial surface and gradually give it density. The artist conducts a deep reflection on pigment, color, light, and their interactions. Gravity and natural phenomena, which might seem to guide the painting, are integrated into this process without ever taking precedence over the artist's will.

Because, for Gaëlle Wagner, it is above all about building, through her technique, a sensory experience. The underlying structure of the work and its progressive enrichment become the guiding thread that accompanies the viewer towards a state of presence and attention.

Her approach is inspired by the way nature organizes its own forms. In a landscape, a rock, a sky, or a sea bottom, nothing exists in isolation: each element takes meaning through the relationships it maintains with the others. It is this logic of interdependence that the artist transposes into her painting. Colors are never thought of separately; they exist one for the other, building images that evoke horizons, mineral phenomena, or aquatic depths, without ever seeking to illustrate them, but rather to bring forth the memory, the impression, or the evocation.

Up close, the eye discovers the richness of the material, the nuances and interactions between the pigments. From a distance, these elements unite into a coherent image, where each part becomes indispensable to the balance of the whole.

This double reading is at the heart of her work. It invites the viewer to a sensory experience, between abstraction and reminiscence, where what nature reveals meets what it leaves suspended. The artist always works with purpose, guiding the gaze towards what she calls a Concrete Abstraction.

Presented in many personal and collective exhibitions, Gaëlle Wagner also creates live painting performances on monumental formats. Her works are now in private collections in France, Europe, and the United States.
