Description
Armchair Gaetano Pesce for b&b - ITitalia series UP DU5 and DU6. Measures: 103 x 120 x 130 cm. It includes ottoman diameter 60 cm. An icon on international post-war design, and one of the most desirable armchairs, in original uplhostery.

Gaetano Pesce (1939) is one of the greatest exponents of Italian design, in particular of radical design. In 1962 he embarked on a career as a designer collaborating with the C&B company (now B&B Italia) on the creation of the UP Series, a series of seven models of polyurethane foam armchairs that immediately became one of the icons of Italian industrial design. The most famous is the UP5 which takes the form of the votive statues of the goddesses of fertility to give life to a real manifesto of political expression on the condition of women: the society of the late sixties was not ready to recognize women capabilities and relegates them to the margins of the political and social landscape. Well after the year 2000, when talking about the concept of his creation, Pesce argued that the theme is still current in certain countries of the world. In 2000, B&B Italia decided to re-propose the entire series of armchairs in a modern key. In 2010 he created for Cassina Sessantuna, a work made up of sixty-one tables which, joined together, form the figure of the characteristic boot, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.

Presentation

Gaetano Pesce, an Italian architect and designer, is recognized worldwide for his innovative and experimental approach to design. Born in 1939 in La Spezia, Italy, Pesce has made an impact with his bold and colorful creations, which often defy conventions and stimulate reflection on society and culture.Pesce studied at the University of Venice where he obtained his degree in architecture. His works reflect a deep knowledge of various artistic fields, ranging from modern design to contemporary art. Pesce was heavily influenced by the artistic movements of his time, but he also drew inspiration from broader themes such as history, politics, and social rights, integrating these elements into his designs in unique and thoughtful ways.Gaetano Pesce's style is characterized by his innovative use of materials and colors. He is particularly known for his work with resins and plastics, which he transforms into functional and expressive works of art. His designs are often marked by fluidity and variability, suggesting that perfection is not necessary for beauty or functionality. This philosophy is clearly revealed in his iconic pieces like the “Up5_6” chair, which combines organic shapes with social commentary.Throughout his career, Pesce has participated in numerous international exhibitions and his works are exhibited in prestigious museums such as MoMA in New York. Its collaborations with renowned brands and designers have also been crucial in developing innovative products that challenge traditional expectations of design and industrial production.Gaetano Pesce's work stands out not only for its originality and innovation, but also for its deep commitment to questioning and commenting on the world through design. His creations are not just objects, but expressions of thoughts, provocations that invite reflection on important subjects such as freedom, identity and diversity. Pesce continues to inspire and influence the field of design with his unique approach and uncompromising vision.
