Xav Art Emotion Gallery is pleased to present an iconic sculpture resulting from the collaboration between the Franco-Swedish artist André Saraiva and the renowned Japanese publisher Medicom Toy.
A three-dimensional reinterpretation of the iconic Mr. A character, this artwork stands out for its pop aesthetic, minimalist design, and resolutely contemporary energy. Its spherical shape, dressed in a vibrant pink and traversed by the character's characteristic white lines, embodies both the spontaneity of graffiti and the elegance of collectible design.
Produced in a limited edition of only 50 copies, each work is hand-signed by André Saraiva, making this piece a collector's item particularly sought after by fans of urban art, contemporary design and pop culture.
perfectly illustrates André Saraiva's ability to fuse the codes of street art, design and contemporary art.
Reducing the figure to its essential elements—a round eye, a cross-shaped eye, a stylized smile—demonstrates a remarkable mastery of visual communication. A few signs are enough to make the work immediately identifiable.
The spherical shape enhances the playful interpretation of the piece while giving it a strong sculptural presence. The absence of angles encourages a continuous flow of the eye and invites the viewer to walk around the work to appreciate all its details.
Through this edition produced with Medicom Toy, Saraiva confirms his pioneering role in bringing contemporary art and popular culture closer together, a dialogue that characterizes the greatest artists of his generation.
Born in the streets of Paris in the late 1980s, Mr. A has become one of the most recognizable figures in international urban art. With his mischievous smile, round eye, and cross-shaped eye, he appears as a universal symbol of freedom, optimism, and spontaneity.
In Mr. A Ball Pink, André Saraiva takes the graphic simplification of his character even further by transforming him into pure volume. The sphere here becomes a metaphor for universality: without angles or borders, it evokes the dialogue between cultures, cities and generations that have adopted Mr. A as a true ambassador of contemporary street art.
The choice of intense pink brings a new emotional dimension to the work. A color of positive energy, affection, and openness, it contrasts with the character's urban origins and creates a captivating visual tension between gentleness and a rebellious spirit.
This sculpture is not just a collector's item; it is a testament to an exceptional artistic journey, that of an artist who succeeded in bringing graffiti into the world's greatest institutions and collections.
André Saraiva is a French-Swedish artist, graffiti artist and entrepreneur born in 1971 in Uppsala, Sweden. Settled in Paris during his childhood, he discovered graffiti culture very early on and became one of the major figures of the European urban scene.
From the 1990s onwards, he developed the character Mr. A, a smiling figure that gradually invaded the walls of Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. This character became his visual signature and one of the most famous symbols of international street art.
Throughout his career, André Saraiva has exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions worldwide. His work is now featured in important private and public collections, while his collaborations with luxury brands, international labels, and design publishers have helped to extend his influence far beyond the world of graffiti.
Considered one of the artists who contributed to the institutional recognition of urban art, André Saraiva continues to develop a body of work where spontaneity, humor, graphic elegance and contemporary culture meet.
André Saraiva, born in 1971 in Uppsala, Sweden, is a renowned French graffiti artist and entrepreneur, best known for his iconic Mr. A character. Raised in Paris after his family fled the Salazar regime in Portugal, Saraiva discovered graffiti at age 18 and created Mr. A in 1989. This distinctive figure, characterized by a bulbous face, top hat, winking eye, and slender legs, became a global symbol of his unique blend of street art and contemporary style. Over the years, Saraiva has tagged over 300,000 Mr. A pieces across various surfaces and media, establishing himself as one of the most influential figures in modern graffiti art.
In recent years, Saraiva has expanded his influence, collaborating with luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel to merge street art with high fashion. His limited-edition works for these brands have attracted art collectors and fashion aficionados globally, showcasing his versatility and creative reach. 2023 marked a significant year in his career, with new exhibitions in London, New York, and Tokyo, reinforcing his status as a leading figure in both the art and fashion worlds. Despite controversy, such as the 2011 graffiti incident at Joshua Tree National Park, Saraiva's legacy as a groundbreaking street artist endures. Today, he remains an influential force in global contemporary art, pushing boundaries and shaping the future of street art and culture.
Saraiva's artistic career took off after opening his Parisian gallery, "La Mercerie d'André," where he sold his art. In 1998, a Japanese sponsor introduced him to Tokyo's vibrant art scene, catapulting him to international fame. He later opened BlackBlock, a concept store at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2002, and created large-scale frescoes at Tokyo's new airport terminal in 2004. Saraiva's rise continued with notable exhibitions, including appearances at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Grand Palais in Paris, and the 54th Venice Biennale. In 2014, a major retrospective was held at the Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon, further solidifying his place in contemporary art history.
