Description

André SARAIVA - A Graffiti LIfe (2022)

Unique work - Artist's book with original drawing

An exceptional artist's book by André Saraiva, enriched with an original drawing made in black felt-tip pen on the flyleaf, signed by the artist.

This 250-page book, including several pop-up pages, is a work of art in its own right, where Saraiva's graphic universe takes on a sculptural dimension. Part artist's publication, part collector's item, and part original drawing, this piece is unique and testifies to André Saraiva's place in the history of contemporary Street Art.

The book is sold with a certificate of authenticity issued by the Xav At Emotion Gallery.

With A Graffiti Life, André Saraiva transcends the simple artist's book to create a true work of art. The original drawing placed at the opening immediately transforms the book into a unique piece.

The pop-ups evoke a city emerging from the pages, echoing the artist's natural territory: the street. The miniature architecture engages in a dialogue with his famous character Mr. A, a symbol of joy, freedom, and optimism.

The contrast between the rigor of the editorial object and the spontaneity of the felt-tip pen stroke recalls the very essence of graffiti: a quick, free and lively gesture.

This work combines several dimensions sought after by collectors:

Born in 1971 in Uppsala (Sweden), André Saraiva grew up in Paris where he discovered graffiti at a very young age. In the late 1980s, he created his iconic character Mr. A, which has become one of the most recognizable signatures in global urban art.

His work lies at the intersection of graffiti, painting, design, publishing, and installation. He currently exhibits in numerous international galleries and institutions and has collaborated with several major luxury brands and international labels.

A major figure in contemporary Street Art, André Saraiva is represented in numerous private collections around the world.

Presentation

André Saraiva, born in 1971 in Uppsala, Sweden, is a renowned French graffiti artist and entrepreneur, best known for his iconic Mr. A character. Raised in Paris after his family fled the Salazar regime in Portugal, Saraiva discovered graffiti at age 18 and created Mr. A in 1989. This distinctive figure, characterized by a bulbous face, top hat, winking eye, and slender legs, became a global symbol of his unique blend of street art and contemporary style. Over the years, Saraiva has tagged over 300,000 Mr. A pieces across various surfaces and media, establishing himself as one of the most influential figures in modern graffiti art.

In recent years, Saraiva has expanded his influence, collaborating with luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel to merge street art with high fashion. His limited-edition works for these brands have attracted art collectors and fashion aficionados globally, showcasing his versatility and creative reach. 2023 marked a significant year in his career, with new exhibitions in London, New York, and Tokyo, reinforcing his status as a leading figure in both the art and fashion worlds. Despite controversy, such as the 2011 graffiti incident at Joshua Tree National Park, Saraiva's legacy as a groundbreaking street artist endures. Today, he remains an influential force in global contemporary art, pushing boundaries and shaping the future of street art and culture.

Saraiva's artistic career took off after opening his Parisian gallery, "La Mercerie d'André," where he sold his art. In 1998, a Japanese sponsor introduced him to Tokyo's vibrant art scene, catapulting him to international fame. He later opened BlackBlock, a concept store at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2002, and created large-scale frescoes at Tokyo's new airport terminal in 2004. Saraiva's rise continued with notable exhibitions, including appearances at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Grand Palais in Paris, and the 54th Venice Biennale. In 2014, a major retrospective was held at the Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon, further solidifying his place in contemporary art history.
