Jean-Michel Othoniel, La rose du Louvre

Presentation

Jean-Michel Othoniel (born 1964 in Saint-Étienne, France) is one of the leading figures of contemporary French art. Graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Cergy-Pontoise in 1988, he has developed a multidisciplinary practice encompassing sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, writing, and performance. His work explores themes of transformation, metamorphosis, memory, and poetic imagination.

Initially recognized for sculptures made from sulfur and wax, Othoniel gained international attention when his works were presented at Documenta Kassel in 1992. In 1993 he began working with blown glass, a material that became central to his artistic identity. Collaborating with master glassmakers in Murano and the CIRVA in Marseille, he created monumental sculptures composed of colorful glass beads that blur the boundaries between jewelry, architecture, and sculpture.

Influenced by Constantin Brancusi, Sophie Calle, and Félix González-Torres, Othoniel’s work combines visual seduction with reflections on fragility, desire, loss, and resilience.

Major solo exhibitions include Crystal Palace (Fondation Cartier, Paris, 2003), My Way (Centre Pompidou), The Treasury of Angoulême Cathedral (2016), La Rose du Louvre (2019), The Narcissus Theorem (Petit Palais, 2021), Treasure Gardens (Seoul Museum of Art, 2022), The Dream of Water (Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, 2022), the Brooklyn Botanic Garden exhibition (2023), the Sara Hildén Museum retrospective (2024), and Othoniel Cosmos ou les Fantômes de l’Amour in Avignon (2025).

Since 2021, Othoniel has been a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. His artworks are held in major museum collections worldwide and are celebrated for their innovative use of monumental sculpture, public art, fountains, stained glass, and site-specific installations.
