Description
This conceptual artwork explores the intimacy of the female form through a bold, abstract lens. Created in 2020, the piece utilizes acrylic to blend organic shapes with raw texture. The composition centers on a swirling, circular motion that suggests a physical imprint. Earthy tones dominate the palette, evoking a sense of skin and natural vulnerability.
The artist employs a fearless approach to femininity, challenging traditional gender roles and patriarchal norms. By reducing the body to a suggestive print, the image transforms a private anatomical detail into a universal symbol of empowerment. The blurred edges and muted colors create a haunting, atmospheric quality.
This experimental approach bridges the gap between painting and body printing. The result is a visceral exploration of identity and presence. Each brushstroke contributes to a narrative of liberation and strength. The artwork remains focused on the tactile relationship between the body and the canvas, emphasizing the raw energy of a physical mark.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
