Description
This fascinating work blends cartography and portraiture, transforming a map of the British Isles into a captivating artistic composition. The face, crowned with a majestic diadem, emerges from the geographical contours, artfully connecting art and topography. The detailed lines of the map cut across the facial features, merging territory and identity. The iconographic angle of the crown arguably symbolises sovereignty, while the carefully labelled Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel anchor the work in a specific geopolitical context. This bold marriage of geography and visual art invites reflection on the relationship between national identity and geographical boundaries. The artist succeeds in transcending simple cartographic representation to offer a profound and provocative visual analysis, prompting the viewer to re-evaluate the way they perceive maps and territories.
Presentation
Born in the Tarn in 1968, her creations imbued with figurative scenes resonate with Fernand Léger's characters. It is this same universe that Clara Castagné stages, on school geographical or anatomical maps that cultivated our minds during childhood. Its main themes are family scenes, mythology, the human body. His figures, with a roundness reminiscent of the silhouettes of modern artists, Léger, Matisse, Picasso, take and give life to geographical maps or anatomical plates.
Clara Castagné renews the art of collage and superposition, dear to the artists of the Bauhaus or the modern movement. His work tells us a story while reminding us of our elementary school lessons.
