Description
The line is nervous and precise on this grain-marked paper. The artist explores here a form of stripped-down figuration. A massive silhouette occupies the space. The face, reduced to geometric shapes and two dark orbs, observes the viewer with a troubling neutrality.
The body blends into a complex drapery. Dense hatching creates a play of organic textures. In the center, an area with ocher tones brings a contrasted warmth. This colored spot evokes an inner presence or a vital core protected by the gray envelope.
The composition plays on the balance between the emptiness of the background and the density of the subject. The graphic rendering recalls the technique of charcoal or lithography. Each line seems to trace a path between the real and the imaginary. The whole exudes an atmosphere of anguish and oppression. The gaze is drawn to the superposition of layers and the transparency of the contours. This piece stands out for its chromatic sobriety and structural strength. The drawing ends with a discreet signature in the upper left corner. Very good overall condition. Exceptional work of textures, and impressions of lace. The title is written on the verso. Shipped flat with certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
Belgian artist Robert Detheux (1932-2010) has presented us with emblematic works throughout his artistic career.
A graduate of the Saint-Luc Institute in fine arts, Detheux taught graphic expression in the advertising section at the Tournai Academy until 1996, while pursuing a career as a painter.
In 1976 Detheux captured critical attention with a series of sensual paintings exploring the obsessive theme of the belly and navel. In 1985, he exhibited at Abras (Brussels) a series of dark paintings decorated with clear calligraphy.
The following year, at the Botanique (Brussels), he created paintings-collages steeped in black humor representing the model little girls of the Countess of Ségur.
Detheux's pictorial research, where the line and the play of textures are omnipresent, clearly reflect his experience as a graphic designer.
Throughout his career, Detheux was rewarded on several occasions, in particular by the Young Belgian Painting prize in 1953, 1954 and 1971. In addition to his distinctions, his works are also present in the collection of the Royal Museums of Belgium.
The captivating works of this major artist have left a lasting mark on the Belgian and international art scene.
