Description
Untitled is an abstract color etching realized by Gustave Singier in 1963. Hand-signed, dated (19)63 and numbered lower margin. Edition 58 of 100 prints. The artwork is attached to a passepartout and includes a vivid red frame. Dimensions: cm 26,5 x 32.

Beautiful mixed colored composition on the tones red and orange by the Belgian painter Gustave Singier (Comines-Warneton, 1909 – Paris, 1984), active in France as member of the new Paris School of Lyrical Abstraction and the Salon de Mai. After meeting the painter Charles Walch, who encouraged him and showed him the freedom of pictorial expression, he started participating in numerous Parisian Salons from 1936: the Salon des Independants, the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Tuileries, etc. In 1945, he became one of the founding members of the Salon de Mai. Like other painters of his generation, Singier drew inspiration from Kandinsky, Klee, and Mondrian. In this period, his art became more fluid, thanks to the effects of watercolor. This is the field in which the artist excels. The oeuvre of Gustave Singier is eclectic: mural paintings, tapestries, stain glasses, mosaics, costume and theatre set designs, burin engravings, lithographs, and illustrated works. He also taught in Paris, at the Ranson Academy from 1951 to 1954, then at the School of Fine Arts from 1967 to 1978. The artist died in Paris in 1984.

Presentation

Gustave Singier was born in Belgium in 1909 and died in 1984.

Gustave Singier creates colourful paintings, often in warm tones; his universe is poetic, cosy, one can even discover there musical rhythms.

He belongs to the Nouvelle École from Paris, is a professor at the académie Rançon and is part of the "non-figurative" group of artists.

This painting suggests a sensitive and concrete reality, but the relationship between painting and this reality goes beyond the mere description contained in the artwork. Non-figuration is different from surrealism in that the reality from the canvas is not generated by the painter's imagination. It is also different from abstraction, as abstraction doesn't refer to any representation or immediate reality. Finally, it is also different from lyrical abstraction that expresses individual emotions in a direct way, and from gestural painting in which the only thing that matters is the gesture of the painter.
